How I revamp the kids’ bedroom

I have always wanted to have a very warm and cosy bedroom for the kids but due to financial constraints (more likely I’m stingy) I just didn’t want to fork out the money for it. So while I was busy I just found more things to make me busier. My neighbour introduced me to Carousell, an Android phone app that allows me to post things for sale.
Soon I am literally posting my whole house for sale. My daybed, TV console, bookshelf, dining table, kids’ bed…….

It all started when someone wanted to buy my kids’ Kura bed from Ikea. I bought it for $299 a year ago. I found it very bulky and makes the room look smaller. So I sold it at $100 and delivered to someone who intended to paint it. Now I have space in the room and my mind started to roam wild…..

I went to Ikea and the kids were having fun with their Kritter range and I have always wanted to buy those beds. Each of them will have their favourite toys in in. But the beds cost $89 each excluding the mattress (70x160cm) and I was not able to use the mattress from their previous bed as it was a single bed (90x190cm).

So I started looking out for secondhand ones. I went on Gumtree and found someone selling the bed for only $20, and went immediately to collect it. Guess what? It was bought for only 3 months and and the Dutch owner was leaving the country. So he told me to pick up 2 mattresses (better range) used for the bed frame on the day they leave the country. $20 for a bed frame and 2 mattresses. A steal! Half room done. Now the next challenge is to find and other bed frame with no mattress. But it wasn’t easy to find, so I went for a $60 bed frame with mattress. So I somehow traded a double deck bed with 2 single deck beds. No need to pay extra and I’m on my way to reorganising my room.

Next the bookshelf. I bought Expedit bookshelf from Ikea at $99 sometime ago and thought it would be useful. No doubt but it is very dusty as well as there are no doors to the bookshelf.

If I want to fix doors it would have cost $15 per door. And the whole bookshelf will be about $200. So I decided to sell the bookshelf at $90 including delivery. If someone comes to collect it by themselves I can release it for $70.

After some enquiries I settle for $60 as someone is coming straight to pick it up the very night. I wanted it out of the house ASAP as my electrician will be coming to install the ceiling fan. I can ask him to drill my bookshelves to the wall at the same time. Then my plan is to buy 2 smaller bookshelves with doors for the kids. Make it colourful and kids friendly.

Tomorrow is Ikea Sale 2014. Let’s see what else I can add to the room.
